[ Mission Statement ]

The Mission and Purpose of the Faculty Technology Resource Center is to develop and support a network of faculty committed to excellence in teaching enhanced by purposeful and innovative applications of new media technologies.
Our goal is to help create and sustain an educational environment responsive to the needs of our students and to the evolving intellectual and professional worlds they must inhabit.

Consulting Services
Want to try something new in one of your classes and are looking for additional support? Have a research or teaching challenge that might be addressed by new technology? Heard about WebCT, Inspiration, The Smart Board, Mathematica or other software and technologies with instructional potential, and want to talk more about what they can do and how they might be useful in your classes? Meet individually with one of our staff to learn more and to plan a project. Set up an appointment to get the additional one-on-one help you need by calling us at x2281 or sending e-mail to FTRC@cwpost.liu.edu.

Faculty Development Workshops & Pedagogy Discussions
The Faculty Technology Resource Center offers a variety of workshops focusing on pedagogical applications for new media technologies. Topics include using online communication tools, creating and enhancing web-based or multi-media course materials, and working with digital video. Please send your suggestions for workshops you would like to see offered to FTRC@cwpost.liu.edu.

Project Development
The FTRC invites instructional technology project proposals from individual faculty and from departments or other collaborative groups seeking instructional design consultation and support for educational projects that make purposeful use of new media technologies.

High-Tech Facility
The faculty center is equipped with a wide-range of continually changing technologies. Currently, you will find a wide-format color printer, scanner, color laser printer, a smart board, both PC and Macintosh computers, and a variety of software including many Adobe and Macromedia products. Digital still cameras and video cameras can be signed out by faculty for uses related to teaching. FTRC staff will be available to assist you in using the equipment and the software

Technology Demos
Attend one of our brief technology demonstrations to see first-hand how technology works. You will be shown how to operate a scanner, digital camera, CD-ROM burner, Smartboard and more. Demonstrations will also include discussions of how to use these technologies to enhance your teaching and research.

Walk-In Hours
Stop by the center anytime and use our equipment, ask a question, meet with other faculty or just grab a cup of coffee.

Equipment For Loan
The IT office offers a variety of equipment available for
loan to faculty members for up to 24-hours. The equipment includes laptops, digital cameras and digital video cameras. Stop by the IT office to make a reservation.

[ Staff ]

Director
Belle Gironda, Ph.D.

Belle Gironda joined the staff at C.W. POST as Director of the FTRC in August, 2003. She received her Ph.D. in English from the University at Albany, State University of New York where she wrote a dissertation titled, After Image: Writing in the Age of Photography Film and Digital Media. She was formerly the Assistant Director for Instructional Development in The Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning at UAlbany where she was in charge of program development and involved in a wide variety of initiatives involving pedagogical applications for instructional technology. She also taught regularly in the English Department and in the School of Information Science and Policy. Belle is a published poet and art critic and an editor and has been involved in multi-media performance in a variety of venues both in the U.S. and abroad.

Faculty Liaison
Michael Rooke, Ph.D.

Mike Rooke joined the C.W. POST campus of LIU in September 2003 as Faculty Liaison for Instructional Technology. Prior to coming to C.W. POST, Mike was Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Hartford, Connecticut, where he served as a full-time faculty member. There he was heavily involved in faculty development, coupling novel pedagogical applications of technology with course management software. His Ph.D. is in analytical chemistry from Kansas State University and his Bachelor’s degree is from Nottingham Trent University, in the UK, his native home. In addition Mike collaborated with NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to develop educational materials to teach science and engineering students about spectroscopy.
